Frederick Douglass Plaque, New Bedford, Mass.

After escaping slavery via the Underground Railroad, Frederick and Anna Douglass made New Bedford their home for five transformative years, from 1838 to 1843. During their time here, they welcomed two children, Rosetta (1839) and Lewis (1840). Sponsored by the City of New Bedford and the New Bedford Chapter of the NAACP, this monument was dedicated on October 17, 1996, marking the centennial anniversary of Frederick Douglass's death in 1895.
